Domestic DCS control systems account for half of the thermal power market.

In China’s power-generation mix, more than 80% is thermal power, underscoring its fundamental role. With rising coal prices, energy-saving initiatives are no longer merely a compliance requirement imposed by national policies; they have become a proactive strategy for reducing losses and boosting profitability. Most power plants achieve energy savings by optimizing operating modes and production processes, and because these measures are straightforward and deliver quick results, variable-frequency drive (VFD) retrofits have become a common approach to energy conservation. In terms of emission-reduction measures, the primary focus is on desulfurization and denitrification to lower the concentrations of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in flue gases. Given the high priority the state places on energy conservation and emissions reduction—particularly the stringent regulations on sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions—these efforts will undoubtedly spur further progress in energy-saving and emission-control initiatives.
In China’s power-generation mix, more than 80% is thermal power, underscoring its fundamental role. In terms of emission-reduction measures, the primary focus is on desulfurization and denitrification to lower the concentrations of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in flue gases.
Due to the nation’s emphasis on energy conservation and emissions reduction, particularly the stringent regulations on sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, demand for automated solutions in energy-saving and emission-control applications is expected to surge. According to statistics, as of 2011, a total of 2,158 coal-fired desulfurization units had been put into operation nationwide, with a combined installed capacity of 578 million kilowatts.
The automated control of flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) systems in thermal power plants can generally be categorized into three scenarios: first, FGD is integrated with the control of peripheral auxiliary equipment such as coal handling and dust removal, with PLCs employed; second, a standalone DCS is used to control the FGD system; and third, the FGD system shares a single DCS with the peripheral auxiliary equipment.
Recently, a study of the service market and automation needs of nearly 100 ultra-large-capacity thermal power enterprises revealed that among more than 210 DCS systems for flue-gas desulfurization control, Xinhua holds the largest market share, while other domestic brands such as Guodian Zhishen and Hollysys each account for over 10% of the market. In summary, domestic brands are poised to capture roughly half of the thermal power flue-gas desulfurization DCS market.
Currently, approximately 130 million kilowatts of thermal power generating capacity in China’s coal-fired power sector still lacks flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment. According to research, the investment required for an FGD project on a 600,000-kilowatt unit is no less than RMB 100 million, with automation systems accounting for about 1% of that total—roughly RMB 1 million. Preliminary estimates indicate that the current FGD projects at existing coal-fired power plants will generate automation demand totaling approximately RMB 200 million.
